An article from the “Playing At The World” blog has several interesting insights. The thing that stands out to me was the point that, given these conflicting player goals, you can never really have a “perfect RPG” that meets the goals of all player types.

Fortunately, I have a game group that appreciates both sides of the spectrum, and we like variety. We lean more story game than an extreme simulations. We don’t play Pathfinder or other games of that complexity. I’d say D&D 5e, Traveller, and games like WEG Star Wars D6 have just the right amount of crunch for us, and strike the balance between crunch and fluf (story-telling).
