Top Stuff I Want To Run Someday (Updates)

Minor updates on my last Top Stuff I Want To Run Someday post.

Since my last post, I’ve stumbled across Apes Victorious, a Planet of the Apes-style game that uses B/X D&D rules. I might run it someday as-is or maybe convert the rules over to Fate or Traveller. For adventures, I’d use a combination of hex-crawl, procedurally generated encounters mixed with Mutant Crawl Classic adventures (which would be placed in the Forbidden Zone).

Top Stuff I Want To Run Someday (Early 2024 Edition)

In a traditional dating back ten years, I like to inventory the ‘games I’m itching to run someday’. This particular list focuses on settings that have robust and concise commercial campaign adventures. I have dozens of settings I’d love to run someday, but the list I picked all have campaigns which provide 2-4 pages of adventure text for each session, which will make it easier to run. The 20-30 page of adventure text for each session (the more typical format for D&D adventures) is not my preference, I find the shorter stuff easier to prep for and easier to run.

Top Stuff I Want To Run Someday (Late 2023 Edition)

In a traditional dating back nine years, I like to inventory the ‘games I’m itching to run someday’. Interesting how things evolve: see my posts in early 2023, early 2022, late 2020, early 2020early 2019, 2017, 2016 and 2014 of things I was itching to run in prior years.

The big change this year is that I recently (for the first time ever!) came up with a list of my favorite game engines to use for campaigns I run. With a couple of exceptions (The One Ring and Pendragon) where there’s an amazing campaign tied to a particular ruleset, I will, for the most part, target to run my favorite systems, which at the moment are story games (Fate, QuestWorlds, and Kids on Brooms), D&D (BX D&D and D&D 5e), and d100 (either Chaosium’s BRP or d00Lite).

Weird War II and the Shadowverse

Weird War II

Weird War II (Click to Enlarge)

My Saturday campaign group has started an Urban Shadows campaign. Our setting we have dubbed the ‘Shadowgames Universe’ (or, as I have taken to thinking of it, the ‘Shadowverse’). It is a sort of Cthulhu / Dresden Files mashup cosmology. Part of what we discussed in creating this setting (since we have 3 GMs who take turns running things) is pulling in other urban fantasy type campaigns such as Solomon Kane, which can link to a grander campaign story, with everything tied together.

I was coincidently prepping some World War II wargame miniatures for an unrelated wargame, when it occured to me that there is an old Savage World setting book I have called ‘Weird War II’ which I think could also be a Shadowverse setting.
