Following the events of the Vanguard novel series, the Federation worked to fortify its presence in the volatile Taurus Reach.

Starbase K-12 was built as a forward base for exploration, diplomacy, and artifact containment, standing as a fragile bulwark against Klingon aggression and Tholian expansion.
